With the rise in popularity of video content on social media, and new trending audios each week, what do you do in terms of your social media marketing? You see everyone hopping on the latest trends and incorporating the newest song of the season in their video promotions, so what’s the deal?

Put simply, any use of copyrighted material without the appropriate permissions is infringement. No doubt about it—this is a line drawn clearly in the sand.

If you are using social media to market your business, product or brand and you are using copyrighted music for promotional purposes, your content may be limited (muted, blocked or deleted) OR your account may get taken down without notice. This is not legal advice, and I know this isn’t what you want to hear—but if you choose to use copyrighted/popular music for commercial purposes/to promote your business, you do so at your own risk!

Why? When you sign up for a social media platform, you are agreeing to the terms of use of that platform—any violation will jeopardize your account, and it's your responsibility to read, understand and accept the terms—yes, even if you just hit 'accept' and didn't actually read them.

Also, and most importantly, you are not allowed to use the work of someone else for your own profit—regardless of how popular/successful/wealthy they seemingly are. Imagine how you would feel if someone else was profiting off of your work—and without your permission!

So how are you supposed to stand out from the crowd and successfully market yourself on social media without using the latest trending sound?

By using short clips of royalty-free music—and one of the easiest solutions to finding royalty-free music is through The Facebook Sound Collection.

The Facebook Sound Collection is a library of royalty-free music and sound effects that you can search from when creating video content—and you’d be surprised at the expanse of the collection! There’s a lot of fun tracks if you just look, and you can breathe easy knowing your business social media profiles will remain in good standing.
